RECOVERY/REGENERATION
re·gen·er·a·tion | \ ri-ˌje-nə-ˈrā-shən: Renewal or restoration of a body, bodily part, or biological system after injury or as a normal process.
WHY IS RECOVERY IMPORTANT?
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY professional athletes invest so much money in recovery practices such as Yoga, Massage Therapy, Cryotherapy Chambers, Cold Tubs, Infrared Saunas, etc.? Because it works! Since the best ability is availability, the things that keep you ready and available matter the most.
IF TRAINING BY ITSELF WAS THE SECRET TO OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE, EVERYONE WOULD BE AN ELITE ATHLETE.
But it’s not…
That’s why we see such a high occurrence of injury with todays amateur athlete. They spend so much time playing their sport or refining sport specific skills, and so little time optimizing the body through strength and conditioning and recovery. This “No Days Off” approach leads to athletes dealing with frequent overuse injuries and ultimately being unavailable when it matters most (during the season). Most Pro athletes understand that recovery is the thing that makes high performance sustainable. Even though the majority of what they post on their social media channels revolves around sport specific workouts and training sessions, they all make time for recovery and regeneration.
HERE IS WHY:
The best ability is availability. If you’re injured, you can’t compete. Proper and efficient recovery reduces the likelihood of injuries such as strains and pulls.
Recovery aims to restore physiological and psychological processes, so that the athlete can compete or train again at an appropriate level.
Recovery allows you to get more transference of training to sport.
If you’re training/competing at a high level, you better be implementing recovery strategies at a high level. The best know that if high intensity training is all that is being done, the athlete is likely to find themselves in a constant overtrained state. This not only leads to them feeling tired, slower, weaker, and unfit, but also poses a significant risk for injury.
